Through the Mangrove Tunnels

The Manuel Antonio kayak tour goes where motorboats can't. In the narrowest sections of the mangrove channels, the roots close in from both sides and the canopy meets overhead, creating a tunnel of green you paddle through at your own pace. The water is still. The sound is the forest.

Sit-on-top kayaks keep you at water level. You're not looking down at the mangroves from a boat deck. You're in them. Branches pass close. The root systems are at eye height. Animals that would move away from a motorboat hold their position as a paddle draws quietly through the water.

Amazon and ringed kingfishers work the overhanging branches at close range. Green iguanas bask on roots at the water's surface. Troops of white-faced capuchin monkeys move through the canopy above, sometimes stopping to look down at the paddlers. The route runs through mangrove habitat near Quepos that the boat tours can't enter.

No kayaking experience is needed. The sit-on-top kayaks are stable and easy to handle. Your guide gives a brief lesson before you set out and stays with the group throughout. Groups are a maximum of 10 paddlers, led by an ICT-certified naturalist who explains the mangrove ecosystem as you go: the role of the mangroves as nursery habitat for marine species, the food web running through these channels, and what you're seeing as you see it.

Bring quick-dry clothes, a waterproof bag for your phone, and reef-safe sunscreen. Some sections offer the option to swim in sheltered lagoons when conditions allow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need kayaking experience for this tour?

No experience needed. Sit-on-top kayaks are stable and easy to paddle. Your guide gives a brief paddling lesson at the start and stays with the group throughout. This tour works for beginners, including children old enough to paddle (typically 7+).

Will I get wet on the kayak tour?

You may get splashed from paddling, and the kayak seats can get wet. Bring a change of clothes, wear a swimsuit or quick-dry clothing, and bring a small waterproof bag for electronics and valuables.

Is kayaking better or worse than the boat tour for wildlife?

Both have advantages. Kayaking is slower and quieter, so you approach wildlife more closely without startling them. The boat covers more ground and reaches the deeper channels. Many guests do both. The experiences complement each other well.
